HISTORY The land on which the two properties sit was originally owned by Henry Burritt.  He sold the land in February 1846 to Alfred Tate, a prominent merchant, who built a stone store.  Alfred Tate and his family (and clerk) lived in the frame house on Centre Street  behind the store.  Alfred Tate passed on seven years later in 1853 (he is buried at Christ Church Cemetery in Burritt’s Rapids) and his clerk Hugh Conn,  took over the store.  The woodframe house (now) attached to the stone store, was built by Hugh Conn, around the late 1850’s.   The buildings have seen many occupants and businesses.  The store later housed  a harness shop, a tin smithy, a bank.  The current owner bought the property, vacant, in 1997 and opened the General Store in May 1998.
