History of Architecture

This home is a simple Georgian/Loyalist style home of a Scottish American influence. The stone foundation walls are approximately three feet thick. The age and beauty of this stone structure mark in time a key to identify the historical past.

It is found amongst a group of stone homes erected along the Rideau Corridor between 1830-1860. The historical designated property site states that 1824 is the approximate date of construction. The Byrnes remained in this home for three generations.

Peter and Gayle Van Esch bought the home in 1983, applied for Heritage status with respect to the stone vault.

The remains of the stone stable now being used to display and protect cherished perennials and a bountiful crop of vegetables have endured the test of time and create an old English resplendent of an old English garden.

The stonework on the exterior of the house was repointed in 1987. The walls are approximately 18 to 20 inches thick. There is no cavity or space between the inside and outside courses of stone, as was common to stone construction.

The home symmetry is typical of Georgian style. The windows and doors feature splayed stone lintels. Each window features a square lug sill on the exterior, made of cut stone.

There is a medium pitch gable roof on both the main house as well as the addition. Presently there is a galvanized tin roof covering the house, but was originally a slate or wooden shingles roof.

The shed extension from the back of the kitchen addition provides shelter for the stone vault. The thickness of the wall in this area is between 24 and 30 inches.

The arched ceiling of the vault was once plastered and dry walled over; it has now been restored to its original stone façade.

The strength of the ceiling lies in the arch, which transfers its weight to the sidewalls. The top is covered by two to three feet of sand, providing excellent insulation. The new homeowners have subsequently built a second Storey over the vaulted area and have opened this newly developed dining room to the kitchen space

The main cooking fireplace located along the north wall of the house was uncovered years ago and rebuilt utilizing the original stone that had been piled into the chimney area.

This home under Section 29 of the Heritage Act 1974 was designated by the “Ontario Heritage Foundation” on July 3, 1984 to be found of architectural or historical value.
